Spheres for Enucleation and Evisceration Patent #7,066,962
The MEDPOR® PLUS Spheres combine the structure of standard
MEDPOR Spheres with a bioactive glass (Bioglass®) mixture. The Bioglass component,
mixed throughout the sphere structure, promotes more rapid fibrovascular ingrowth
into the MEDPOR PLUS sphere.
MEDPOR is a biocompatible porous polyethylene material. The interconnecting,
omni-directional pore structure allows for rapid fibrovascular ingrowth and
integration of the patient's tissue. Bioglass is a 100% synthetic graft material
that facilitates a healing response when combined with body fluids.

Activation Instructions for MEDPOR PLUS Spheres
MEDPOR PLUS Orbital Implants are provided sterile with a 35cc syringe. Activation of the MEDPOR PLUS Sphere must be performed in the sterile field. Pictures are for demonstration purposes only and do not reflect a sterile environment. |
Following removal of the implant from its protective package, it should be placed in a basin of clean, sterile saline. This greatly reduces the chance of contaminating the implant with lint and other materials. |
Place a sterile object in a syringe to be used as a spacer between the implant and the end of the syringe. A spacer may be made from any non-lint or non-powder containing material, such as the syringe cap. |
Insert the implant into the syringe barrel so that it rests on top of the spacer. |
Insert the plunger; draw sterile saline into the syringe to cover the implant. An appropriate antibiotic may be added to the saline solution at the surgeons discretion. |
Turn the syringe tip up and expel excess air. |
Seal the syringe tip and retract the plunger to draw air from the implant. Shake the syringe to dislodge air bubbles from the surface of the implant. Slowly release the vacuum by returning the plunger to its original position. |
Release the seal from the syringe tip and expel the air removed from the implant. Repeat, as needed, until the implant no longer floats. |
