MEDPOR Coated Tear Drains are designed to bypass the obstructed lacrimal
drainage system for treatment of chronic tearing with the added advantages
of tissue ingrowth.
Glass tear drains have historically been used for this application. While
these procedures have typically been deemed successful, the incidence of
extrusion of glass tubes requires the surgeon to perform an additional
procedure to place another tube.
The inner glass core of the MEDPOR Coated Tear Drains conducts fluid into the
nasal cavity while the thin covering of linear high-density porous
polyethylene biomaterial permits tissue ingrowth. The porous polyethylene
coating is the same material that has been used successfully in surgical
implants for over 15 years. The interconnecting, omni directional pore
structure allows for rapid fibrovascular integration of the patient's
tissue.
MEDPOR Coated Tear Drains are provided STERILE, packaged individually in
double peel pouches and should not be resterilized. The drains have a
diameter of 3.5mm and are available in a wide range of lengths to accommodate
a variety of patients.
